The time has come: after the summer break, the Landesjugendjazzorchester Hamburg is starting its new season with an almost entirely new, young and enthusiastic line-up and an exciting programme. With New York – Rio – Hamburg, the LJJO is not only celebrating the start of its new ensemble on September 23 at JazzHall, but also a special anniversary.

Jazz legend John Coltrane would have turned 100 on September 23, 2026. For this reason, the LJJO Hamburg is celebrating this influential musician, who had a profound impact on 20th-century jazz, with a musical tribute.

As artistic director, we are delighted to welcome Brazilian musician, bandleader and composer Emiliano Sampaio, who is based in Graz. Together with the LJJO, he will honour this exceptional artist with a world premiere written especially for the occasion: Coltrane’s FINAL, performed exactly on the 100th anniversary of the birth of this great genius!

With Emiliano Sampaio, the band will also bring jazz music inspired by his Brazilian roots to the stage, with an irresistible sound and groove. A particularly special feature of the programme is the return of young Hamburg jazz singers, who will once again perform together with the big band after a long break.

Audiences can look forward to an evening of high-calibre big-band jazz – a musical journey around the world full of energy, emotion and cultural encounters, celebrating the unique power of jazz to bring people together across borders.

The concert at JazzHall is already sold out, so make sure to join us for our Sunday concert on September 27 at 5:00 p.m. at Kulturforum Lüneburg.
